Choosing good kids sewing machines is not too difficult, but it is important to choose a machine of high quality or it won’t last long. Fortunately, kids sewing machines of quality that last for many years can be found for less than $100. It doesn’t make sense to spend more than this initially until you know for sure the child’s interest is genuine.
The first consideration is the brand. Is it one you’ve heard of before? Have they been around a long time to prove longevity of products? Do they have good reviews in general?
The next thing to look for is simplicity. Children tend to have shorter attention spans and too many options to fiddle with on a machine can turn them off. The things to look for in a machine description should include:
- Easy to thread needle and bobbin
- Snap on presser feet
- Low built-in stitch count (no more than 10)
- Foot pedal
- 4 or 5 Stars in user reviews
Keep in mind these machines are meant for basic sewing projects to learn on such as pillowcases and simple garments. They are not meant for quilting projects or items that use heavier materials.
Sewing has a fairly long learning curve and it’s best for kids to be able to operate the machine on their own and progress at their own pace. If the child’s interest persists (often times it does not), then they will eventually be ready for a higher grade machine that can handle more complicated projects.
